Bison in Alaska: Alaska’s Plains bison (Bison bison) population stems from an initial relocation of animals in 1928 from the National Bison Range at Moiese, Montana. Twenty-three bison (6 males and 17 females) were shipped to College, Alaska, then to Delta Junction. The Delta Herd, from which all other Alaska plains bison herds originated, was obtained before introgression of cattle genes into bison at the National Bison Range. Thus, Alaska’s plains bison are among the relatively small number of herds of genetically pure plains bison (ADF&G 2007 pp. 5-6). Hunting of this herd started in 1951, by limited entry permit, to manage the size of the Delta herd at about 360 bison prior to calving.
Delta Bison Records: Although this herd is small compared to bison herds in the Lower 48, the Delta herd has produced several record-class bulls. Of the 53 record bull bison taken in Alaska, recorded in the 15th addition of Boone and Crockett Records, twenty-eight were recorded from the Delta herd. There are four free-ranging bison herds in Alaska, with Delta reported as the largest at about 400 animals.
